What’s the difference between dry skin, and dehydrated skin?
Dry skin, or alipoid skin, generally refers to skin that is lacking in oil. Dehydrated skin is characterized by lack of moisture (water) in the Stratum Corneum. This explains why even oily skin can experience dehydration. As mentioned, dehydration is a lack of water, not oil. This means sebaceous oil activity can still be normal or even overactive in dehydrated skin. Both dry and dehydrated skin can experience:
- irritation, inflammation and itchiness
- a feeling of tightness or tautness
- a look or feel of roughness
- slight to severe flaking and scaling
- fine lines, cracks that can sometimes bleed and severe redness.
One of the biggest consequences is an increase in sensitivity, as dryness and dehydration are precursors to sensitized skin.
Dry skin also is called xerosis. Complex factors contribute to dry, flaky skin, and several of these change with age. Environmental factors such as ambient dryness, irritants, or bathing habits may be involved, as well as individual characteristics related to medical conditions, genetics, or ageing. As the biochemistry of dry skin becomes better understood, we are better able to treat this problem.
Our skin is our largest organ and our first line of defense against bacteria, pollution and other irritants, so it’s important to keep it healthy. Skin is supposed to be soft and supple, but it’s easy for skin to dry out and become rough, cracked and itchy. Dry skin is caused by a variety of factors: how you shower, the soap you use, how you heat and cool your home, the clothes you wear and the climate you live in
Dry skin can typically be prevented, but it’s also easy to treat if your skin is already dry and cracked. You may be able to solve the problem by simply using a moisturiser, but if you’re using one and not getting the desired results, you may need to try a different moisturiser.
