How Are Chemical Peels Performed?
We normally ask you to prepare your skin for 2-4 weeks prior to your peel. Pre-treatment strengthens the skin, prepares it for the best possible treatment result and also firms the basis of your ongoing skin care routines. After all, once you have improved your skin you will want to maintain it as long as possible.
On the day of treatment, your skin will be cleansed thoroughly to remove excess oils. The chemical peel, possibly several layers, will be applied. Depending on the peel type, your face may feel very hot. Depending on the peel, a fan or cold air will be available to make the treatment more comfortable. The chemical peel produces a controlled wound, enabling new, regenerated skin to appear.
Post peel instructions
The peel performed on your skin may cause increased sensitivity. Side effects may include but are not limited to stinging, itching-irritation, redness, swelling, tightness, peeling and scabbing.
What should I avoid during the healing process?
For 3 days following the peel, avoid sweating, heavy exercise, hot baths/showers and having your hair coloured.
When will I start peeling and for how long?
The skin may appear red and flushed immediately after the treatment. Over the next, approximately 7 days, the skin may feel tight and appear tan in colour. Rarely, the skin may appear splotchy. Peeling may begin anywhere from 1-3 days post peel. The peeling usually starts around the mouth, chin, cheeks and the eyes. The neck and forehead are often the last areas to peel. Peeling can last up to seven days. It is important for the client to understand the peeling process and not to pull on loose skin. Hyper-pigmentation and infection can occur when loose skin is pulled.
Do I need to stay out of the sun?
Yes. Protect your skin from direct sun exposure with a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 for a minimum of 3 days post-treatment to prevent hyper-pigmentation. A hat may be worn if necessary. Compliance with the use of a daily sunscreen on an ongoing basis is mandatory, especially with exfoliation treatments.
When can I start using my normal skincare products again?
You may re-introduce your normal skincare products, including alpha-hydroxy acids and retinoids, once your skin is completely healed (approximately 1 week post-peel procedure).
