What is it?

The story behind AHA's, Alpha Hydroxy Acids, or AHAs, are commonly referred to as "fruit acids" or "food acids" as they are found in fruits and foods, e.g. lactic acid from sour milk, glycolic acid from sugar cane, malic acid from apples, tartaric acid from grapes and citric acid from citrus fruits. Their actual use for skincare dates back to ancient Egyptian times with Cleopatra bathing in milk to soften and rejuvenate her skin and the ancient Romans using grape wines to soften skin. AHAs rejuvenate the skin by two principal means of action - exfoliation and moisturization. Exfoliate, our skin has a natural renewal process that requires the exfoliation of dead surface cells on a continuous basis as new cells are formed and migrate to the surface. As we age this process slows down and creates a "traffic jam" of dead cells on the skin's surface that results in uneven skin tones, sallow complexion, dry skin and general loss of skin glow and radiance. AHAs exfoliate skin because they help dissolve the cellular cement that holds dead cells together, thereby removing unwanted pigment and rough textured skin. As new cells migrate to the surface in a more uniform compact order, the skin appears smoother, radiant and youthful. Moistursation, AHAs are also powerful moisturizers that stimulate the skin to produce hyaluronic acid (HA); HAs moisture retention properties act as the skin's natural water reservoir. In other words, unlike typical moisturizers that act by forming an occlusive layer on the skin to help prevent water loss, AHAs hydrate from the inside out by increasing HA deposition and helping to bind the moisture in the skin.

The Lactic Acid HA Correlation, Lactic acid is our body's natural skin moisturiser, being natural to the human body dramatically improves the safety profile and results of the products. Lactic acid is superior to all other AHAs (70-95% more effective than glycolic acid) at increasing hyaluronic acid deposition in the skin, and therefore is the AHA of choice for increasing the skin's natural moisture content, critical in the treatment of aging skin. Recent research has shown that AHAs stimulate skin moisturization via a natural cell "wound healing" mechanism and since Lactic acid is the natural "cell signal" AHA, it produces even more dramatic results.

The Importance of Hyaluronic Acid in the Skin, Hyaluronic Acid or HA (not to be confused with AHA) is one of the most important, if not the most important, macromolecules of the human body, and is absolutely vital to the creation and maintenance of healthy skin. HA is a very large polymeric carbohydrate found in the extra cellular matrix (ECM) surrounding our skin cells and is able to bind thousands of times its molecular weight in water; in essence it is our skin's natural water retention complex, without it our skin would shrivel up like a raisin. HA provides the vehicle that cells move through and is therefore vital to tissue differentiation and wound healing. Our skin is an HA metabolic factory: it is always making HA, breaking it down, and recycling it. In fact, in about a four day period, we replace all of the HA in our skin. The natural trigger for the synthesis of HA by our skin is lactic acid. Lactic acid stimulates HA deposition in the skin at the greatest rate compared to all other AHAs, producing new HA in a natural way that makes your skin look healthy and radiant.

How does it work?

The first signs of skin ageing come from decreased skin moisture content comobined with a decrease in skin's natural exfoliation and renewal rate, resulting in dull skin, lack of suppleness, dryness, uneven skin tone and fine lines and wrinkles. Advanced AHA helps correct both of these problems by prompting the skin to "self moisture", or moisturise from the inside out. A unique combination of lactic acid and skin antioxidant vitamins help promote normal exfoliation and renewal rate, to return the skin to more youthful, healthy appearance.

Are AHA's irritating to the skin?

AHAs are not irritating to the skin if formulated properly at the correct pH levels, above pH 3.5. Many years ago in the early 90's we established the relationship between AHA product's pH & concentration and the effect on skin irritation and sensitivity. AHA product irritation is a function of pH and not concentration. Therefore, if AHA products are formulated at pH 3.5 or greater they produce very little skin sensitivity or irritation. By raising product pH levels through the process of partial neutralization of the AHA we can deliver higher concentrations of AHA, needed for the most dramatic anti-aging benefits, without unnecessary skin irritation. PRIORI Advanced AHA products are formulated in this manner with products pH's ranging from 3.8-4.4 much closer to the natural pH of the skin.

Does it take long to see results from PRIORI Advanced AHA use?

Within a few weeks of using PRIORI Advanced AHA products on a regular basis, skin should begin to look and feel smoother, younger and healthier. The look of fine lines and wrinkles will begin to diminish and complexion and texture will appear more even. An average of 2 to 6 weeks should be allowed for visible results, depending on the condition of the skin prior to using PRIORI Advanced AHA products.

Have the products ever been tested on Animals?

No, the products are not tested on Animals. All clinical testing is performed on human subject volunteers.

Can I use PRIORI Advanced AHA Skincare products if I am pregnant or lactating?

Cosmetics, Cosmeceuticals and most Prescription Drugs are not tested for reproductive toxicology. PRIORI Advanced AHA skincare products have not be tested and it is a personal choice between the client and his/her physician if any products should be used during pregnancy. Client's should always refer to their doctor for this answer.
